Got to wonder though

Got to wonder

There are too many things going on this planet at the same time. Somewhere someone is dying while someone just dropped into the planet. There are way too many things happening for anyone to be able handle at a single point of time. Facebook is one such example of too many things happening at the same time. There is a new thing happening on it almost every hour or so. One such thing which is currently going on is the English language test that everyone is taking up and putting up their scores on facebook. Now, the language is not an alien language to many Indians but most of us know how it is used. I will be very surprised if everyone knew the meaning to the following words: Malleable, Arcane, Nefarious, Bombilate, Jargogle, Pedantic, Lubitorium, and Abusion. Could any Indian be that good that he/she knows the meaning of all of them? The answer is of course YES, in case we are talking about probability. However, the question is about common people. Now, the other thing is, does it prove that you are better than everyone else if you get 10 on 10? How does a rating or quiz define your overall vocabulary? I don’t think so.

Knowing the meaning of a word is one thing, using it on a daily usage is different. Will you be able to use these 10 words in your everyday life? Possibly yes, but what guarantee is there that another Indian will understand those words. Having a bigger list of words in your vocabulary bank does not mean you are better than anyone else in the Indian context. It is your ability to simplify each word and use them with the right audience. You must be able to choose the right word between the synonyms of a word. I am not good at this language, I am still learning and I don’t think the learning will ever stop. What I know of this language is “the simpler the better”. It is better for me if 100 people understand me rather than just a handful; having said that, it is a must to learn new words and synonyms of that word in particular so that you would be able to simplify.

I am always baffled by this language every single day. Especially the way we Indians use it. We have conveniently altered the language to our liking. There is something called an “Indian English” now. I think it is got to do more with the way we convert from our native language to English while speaking the language. It is evident everywhere. I have not met a PhD degree holder in the language. I do not know what their take on the language in India is. I somehow have a feeling that they consider themselves much better than anyone else in India and they have their own planet. Similarly, the language also changes with your status in the society. The more educated society and the rich tend to speak in a different way. The lesser ones in a different way; so on and so forth. Every single state and city in this country speaks English is their own different way. Each state has their own language which actually means that multiple languages are getting converted to English. That also means there is no one Indian way of speaking. So, where is the “Indian English” coming in? Should it not be Karnataka English, Tamil English and so son and so forth?

None of us would like someone speaking our own language in a different way. We are too proud of our own native language that we will keep correcting the guy is we find any mistake. We are too proud and always tell others “not to ruin the language”. Now, what are we doing with someone else’s language? English

I have no idea what I just typed. Hee hee
